It was written to remind, not to teach, so every line assumes you already understand it. You need something that decodes each page: what it is, what is important, why it is important, how it is tested, and how to understand it. The First Aid Guide does that with Focus On, ELI5, How is this tested?, the Concept Walkthrough and the best video for the topic on the pages that need one. Then you apply it with the page MCQs, Mehlman's videos and UWorld, and recall it with the FA Foundation Anki, which carries the First Aid page number on every card. ## Page text USMLE Vault · Step 1 Why First Aid is not enough on its own "Just read First Aid." First Aid on its own is a very dense book. It was written to remind, not to teach. You need something to decode it, then a way to apply it, then a way to recall it: decode with the First Aid Guide, apply with Mehlman and UWorld, recall with FA Foundation Anki . Then First Aid is enough. Read this first First Aid is the backbone of Step 1. I'm not telling you to drop it. I'm telling you why reading it alone doesn't work. Every line in it assumes you already understand it. That's why IMGs spend 3 hours on 1 page, Google half of it, and still retain nothing. Every page has to answer 5 questions: what it is, what is important, why it is important, how it is important, and how to understand it . The book prints none of the 5 answers. Focus On: "The embryology timeline itself is low-yield. Don't memorize weeks. Focus on understanding reciprocal induction between the ureteric bud and metanephric mesenchyme, and master Potter sequence completely." Exam reality: "I didn't see any question from renal embryology during prep or on the real exam. Potter sequence is the only very important concept from embryology." The Trap: the question may give an unusual cause of oligohydramnios (maternal ACE inhibitor use, bilateral renal agenesis, posterior urethral valves) and ask what happens to the fetus. The book gives you the same page with none of those 3 sentences. The page opens by telling you not to study half of it.
